Matthew Johnson (Matt Saxx)

Matthew Johnson (Matt Saxx)

Matthew Johnson, better known under his stage alias Matt Saxx, has, in his short career so far, become widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading nightclub saxophonists.

After his childhood on the Isle of Wight, where he initially studied the clarinet, Matt was soon lured to the bright side and, under the apprenticeship of Gary Plumley (of Sax Appeal and Snowboy and the Latin Section fame), he fell in love with the raw power of the tenor saxophone, namely a Yanagisawa T901. Completely hooked, he undertook a BA in Jazz Studies at Leeds College of Music where his mentor was Jim Corry, sax player with Jamiroquai.

Both during his degree course and since graduating, Matt has continued to soak up the music of Maceo Parker, Gerald Albright and Joshua Redman. His other musical influences include James Carter, Dave O’Higgins, Russ Van Den Berg and Stanley Turrentine.

Matt gained his grounding in the club world with Ray Chan’s Candypants performing at their events worldwide.

Through the years, Matt has represented various brands that students will immediately recognise, such as Bad Manners by TJ Yesufu, and Matt Winterbottom and Dave Gardner-Chan’s Voodoo Events. Matt’s regular haunts include Leeds night-spot Fibre, where events are run by well-known promoter Zach Williamson and Matt Saxx also appears frequently for Kim Williams at the Viper Rooms chain, often working with DJs Lawrence James and James Humphries. He is the first-call saxophonist for the FunkyLove brand where he performed recently with Ibiza legend Abigail Bailey. Other regular gigs include Revolutions bars across the UK, often alongside percussionist Bongo Sean.

From the music circuits of Northern England, Matt has spread his wings to London and the South East of England, taking the stage at venues such as The Wellington in Fulham and Luna in Hornchurch, Essex. Latterly, he has moved further afield to the UAE, Marbella and Ibiza, where, between May and October, he is a regular at Ibiza Rocks Café, at Eden and at Andy Matthews’ Plastik. The winter season has recently seen Matt at the world-famous Dicks Tea Bar in the ski resort of Val d’Isere, performing alongside fellow saxophonist Chris Sharp, with Swedish sensation Sofia Langdren on violin.

Matt Saxx’s latest ventures include the Ministry of Sound album launch for UK top 40 artist Tom Zanetti at Mission and performances at the personal invitation of Wayne Lineker at Ocean Beach Club, Ibiza. Furthermore, Matt continues to work with Eats Everything protégé Josh Coakley and MTV artist Damon Hess, with whom he has had chart success with tracks including Crazy [feat. Lydia Lucy] and Dancefloor [feat. Emilie Cunliffe].

Whilst enjoying ongoing success in the club scene, Matt continues to work with session musician and best friend Dan Hudson on their album Matt and Dan Butcher Jazz.

Matt plays: Yanagisawa A901 & T901.
